Container Staircase
Installation for Southbank Centre, London

This new staircase for Southbank Centre in London was commissioned as part of the Festival of Britain 60th Anniversary Festival.

The staircase has opened up a new route through the site, created planted terraces from which to view the square below and places for people to sit. Water pumped from the ventilation system in the Royal Festival Hall is diverted through the staircase and circulated with a 'Papa Pump' to irrigate a planting scheme.

The material palette celebrates an architecture of borrowing, re-purposing and adapting mass-produced objects and has now received planning permission for three years.

We are interested in how we can create new routes through our urban environment using readymade ‘building blocks’, and exploiting existing urban infrastructure.

The staircase explores the nature of power and production in Britain today. It is made from shipping containers and pallets, using recycled wood and ‘off the shelf’ components

This project follows on from two installations at Chelsea Flower Show continuing our exploration into circular, self-contained planting systems.
